"I have been having piano lessons with Brooke for about 7 months. Our lessons have really evolved over time, from practicing graded pieces and working on my expression, to now more listening and interpretation skills.
Brooke is really able to bring music theory to life. I feel that I now have a much fuller and richer understanding of music than I ever have before, and am able to work out how to play some things by ear. I had a bit of a fear of getting things wrong before, and of not doing things perfectly, and I believed I couldn’t do certain things (such as improvisation).
"Through Brooke’s kind, gentle and encouraging approach, I have lost this fear and now know that mistakes are an essential part of the process of becoming a musician. I have several diagnoses, but Brooke is able to dynamically decipher what I can do in any given moment. She always treats me as though I am capable and doesn’t make assumptions about my potential.
Brooke keeps showing me different angles to look at musical problems from, until I have a fuller understanding of it. I often bring things I want to work on, from working out the chords of songs I want to play, to arranging short songs for the choir I’m a part of. Brooke is able to be flexible and show enthusiasm about whatever I bring. This feels like a very collaborative approach to music, where Brooke is there as a facilitator to my own knowledge, potential and path, rather than a teacher. I really enjoy my lessons with Brooke and also think she is just a wonderful human being!"
